About This Project
Santa María de Buil, Ainsa, 2014

A complete renovation of a small stone barn in a rural, isolated location.

The idea was to create a completely self sufficient, extremely well insulated and highly energy efficient holiday home, keeping only the original stone walls.

The interior is designed to maximise the limited space and create a feeling of openess using integrated storage and customized solutions.

Rainwater is harvested from the roof and pumped using a solar pump to a storage tank where it supplies the house through gravity. Waste water is treated on site by a reed bed filter. Heating and hot water are provided with an integrated solar and biomass system.

All the building materials are natural, breathable and non-toxic; stone walls, timber structure and earth plaster.
